Whelan family papers, 1869-1936.

Log book, certificate and reminiscences relating to William Whelan, Sr. (1843-1908) and William Whelan, Jr. (1872-1975). Includes a daily log book, from 1869 to 1872, with notations on visitors to the station which include name or race, number of people, destination, and mode of transportation; as well as a certificate of William, Sr.'s election as supervisor of Graham County in 1886 and his contract to deliver mail. Also present are handwritten reminiscences by William, Jr. about ranch life and family history.

William Whelan, Sr. was a native of Ireland; he arrived in Arizona Territory to become wagon boss for Hooker and Hines Freighting Lines in 1869. He became foreman for the Sierra Bonita Ranch in 1872. He ran a stage station at Point of Mountain, Ariz., which was located east of Tucson on the road to Camp Bowie. William, Jr. was born in 1872; he spent most of his life working as a cowboy for the Hooker ranch spread. William, Jr. died in 1975 at the age of 103. From the description of W...
